The University System of Maryland Extends COVID-Related Leave

Under current regulations, the Federal leave program provided under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) is scheduled to sunset December 31, 2020.  As of now, Congress has not extended the leave beyond the end of this year.

Due to the expected continued impact of COVID-19 in Maryland and across the University System, the USM has announced that all employees of its institutions may continue utilizing the same leave provisions which have been in effect under the FFCRA.  Specifically, Emergency Paid Sick Leave and Expanded Family and Medical Leave will continue to be provided by the University to all employees through June 30, 2021.

The USM guidance does not change the provisions of the leave offered or how the University will administer them.  Employees will not receive increased hours of leave in addition to that which was originally provided by the FFCRA; they will have the additional time to use any leave already available to them for qualifying COVID-related absences.

If Congress amends the provisions of FFCRA related to Emergency Paid Sick Leave and Expanded Family and Medical Leave prior to June 30, 2021, this guidance will cease to be effective to the extent it conflicts with any such amendments.
